A Festive Front Porch with Natural Charm

Our front porch has natural elements. Urns, a thrift store basket and a copper boiler pot is filled with fresh greenery, evergreen branches, red berries, birch logs, and pine cones. This year I added a fresh wreath to the base of the basket to add more organic textures. What do you think? The best part is that these natural materials work beyond the Christmas season. My childhood sled leans on a tree with a fresh wreath and vintage ice skates. I purchased these at the thrift store for $3. A great deal, right!

Cindy’s Note: Sadly, in our we lost our garden centers, however, our grocery stores sell fresh greenery. Can you believe the greens in my copper boiler post are fresh garland?  I cut it into sections and pushed them into leftover soil from our summer flowers. This is a great way to stay on budget. Fresh greenery can get expensive if you don’t have access to it in your yard. Be sure to water them to look their best.

Create a Nature-Inspired Christmas Look with Rustic Touches

When arranging nature-inspired Christmas decor, arrange items together to create a truly natural look. For example, in our dining room on our Christmas table, I added different styles of faux evergreen branches. Mixing textures and a variety of faux greenery adds a more natural look. It’s a good idea to continue the theme of natural materials, especially since our home has a semi-open floor plan. I added natural items such as dried pomegranates, pheasant feathers, birch logs, and pine cones. These rustic accents will be seen in our living room and other table centerpieces with nature-inspired Christmas decor. Glass vases with walnuts and faux greens, votive candles, and large wood slices add to the cozy atmosphere.

Cindy’s Natural Greenery Tip: High-quality faux greenery can be expensive. However, I have purchased my greenery over time. The best part of this blog post is that I share tips about the easy way to plan for Christmas so Pin or bookmark this for next year. As an example, I purchased natural greenery for table centerpieces around this time on sale and Christmas in July. Let’s look at the living room decorated with natural decorations. Here I will share simple ideas on how I change these simple Christmas decorations for winter.

Fake Trees Evolved: To Realistic Beauty

Fake evergreen trees have come a long way. I remember how fake these trees were when I was young. Do you remember when evergreen branches of fake trees were fat and looked like toilet bowl brushes? I’m aging myself a little bit here, however, I remember. No trunk had bark on it. Our tree has natural materials, to resemble bark and it looks like a real tree. We love it so much, we have two! Friends have asked if they are real trees, however this year we only decorated one. How about the older flocked Christmas tree? The flocking went everywhere.

How to Dry Fruit for Natural Christmas Ornaments

To make your own dried orange slices:

  • Set the oven to a low temperature of 200 degrees
  • Slice oranges 1/4 inch thick
  • Remove excess moisture with a paper towel
  • Arrange orange slices in a single layer, not touching on an oven-safe cooling rack over a large baking sheet.
  • Baking until dry approximately 2-3 hours. After the first hour flip the slices and rotate the baking sheet. Keep a close eye on them to avoid burning.
  • Store the orange slices in a paper bag or cardboard box in a dry and dark place.

Add citrus fruit to your Christmas table as place cards with a sprig of natural greenery. Add these to centerpieces on an entryway table, coffe table, or dining area. Make homemade Christmas ornaments with cinnamon sticks, acorn caps, or star anise.

Simple Christmas Decorations for the Living Room

Our living room coffee table has a natural wreath that adds simple beauty from fall through winter. This is why my wreaths are extremely budget-friendly. Small grapevine wreaths with batter-operated candles and tiny pinecones add texture and warmth to this festive season. A chunky knit throw is a must to snuggle, drink hot chocolate, and watch Christmas movies.

Cindy’s Wreath Tip: Wreaths aren’t just for hanging. They make beautiful centerpieces with a battery-operated candle or a vase with flowers or greens.

These are my favorite battery-operated candles

Natural Greenery for the Buffet

Lastly, our buffet is filled with assorted faux greenery and pheasant feathers. Pillar candles are burned down. I scooped the wax out and added battery-operated tealights. I wrapped jute around the candles and used my hot glue gun to add star anise and mini boxwood wreaths. These simple ideas add extra organic textures.
