DIY Pumpkin Spice Salt Dough Recipe Easy Fall Craft

Mix Up a Fun Twist: Crafting with Pumpkin Play Dough Will Make Your House Smell Amazing

In addition, it’s a fun twist to an original salt dough recipe. Besides, during the drying process, the house smells amazing.  The best part is that all you need is one cup salt, all-purpose flour, cookie cutters, and a cup of warm water. So, let’s make this DIY pumpkin spice salt dough recipe easy fall craft and bookmark this play dough recipe.

This pumpkin pie play dough is a great way to create gift tags, mini pumpkins, wreaths, and ornaments.

Preheat oven to 200 degrees f.

Equipment:

Ingredients:

  • All-purpose flour
  • Cup salt
  • Cup of warm water
  • Ground Cinnamon
  • Clove
  • Ground Ginger
  • Nutmeg
  • Pumpkin Pie Spice
  • Optional – food coloring, glitter glue pen, and essential oil

Step 1: Spice Up Your Salt Dough: A Fall Recipe for Crafting Fun

In a large bowl, add 2 cups all-purpose flour and 1 cup salt. Add 2 tsp. clove, ginger, and nutmeg 3 tsp. ground cinnamon and pumpkin pie spice. Whisk dry ingredients.

Slowly add 1 cup of warm water and combine with the dry ingredients to the consistency of pumpkin pie play dough

Cindy’s Pumpkin Salt Dough Tip: If you want to add food coloring or essential oils to your salt dough add it to the cup of water and stir. If you want to add glitter directly to your salt dough, the only thing is your dough will become stickier. You may need to add a bit more flour. I found glitter glue pens that can be added to your salt dough once the drying process is finished.

Step 2: Get Hands-On: Knead Your Dough for a Smooth, Craft-Ready Finish

After adding the cup of water to your dry ingredients use your hands until the water is incorporated into your play dough recipe. Knead your dough for 5-10 minutes to get a smooth texture. The dough will form a ball of dough. You will be amazed at how much flour you can incorporate with your hands. This will result in a smooth surface to add craft paint, glitter glue pen, or stamping.

Step 3: Roll Out Your Pumpkin Pie Play Dough with a Sprinkle of Spice

Roll your pumpkin pie play dough on a flat surface. I use a marble pastry board, however, a silicone baking mat. After adding the dough ball to a flat surface add a little bit of ground cinnamon, clove, or nutmeg to the rolling pin and your flat surface. This helps prevent your dough from sticking and works like a charm. Roll your dough ¼ inch thick.

Cindy’s Rolling Tip for this amazing recipe, roll a little bit of your play dough recipe at a time on your parchment paper covered cookie sheet. Then the only thing you have to do is remove the excess dough and the cookie sheet is ready for the drying process. This is a great way to work on this fun craft especially if counter space is limited. In the future, I will be rolling my dough out this way. It saves time for clean up!

Step 4: Cut Out Your Creations: Fun Shapes for Your Salt Dough

Cut out your salt dough with cookie cutters of your choice. Add them to your parchment paper covered cookie sheet.

Cindy’s Salt Dough Tip: If you are making ornaments, use a small straw or pipe cleaners to make a small hole to add jute, twine, or ribbon.

Step 5: Bake and Create: Perfectly Dried Salt Dough Ready for Decorating

Bake your pumpkin salt dough in a 200-degree f. oven for 30 minutes. I flip over my pieces and bake for another 30 minutes. Your salt dough will be dry and hard. Let the salt dough cool completely before painting with glitter glue pens, craft paint, or stamping with ink. Here’s a direct link to the stamps I use.

Step 6: Seal the Deal: Add a Protective Coat for Long-Lasting Salt Dough Creations

For extra protection use a paintbrush or foam brush and add a thin coat of matte Mod Podge to each side of your salt dough or spray each side with Mod Podge matte spray sealer.

Cindy’s Note: The salt can rise to the top. This lightens the color of the dough. I don’t mind it. In fact, I think it adds charm and makes them look aged. Add vegetable oil and rub with cinnamon or cloves to darken. Let them dry completely. Then stamp them. The cutouts have to be free of oil for the ink to stick. I have tried vegetable oil on its own and it has never worked for me.

Keep It Safe: Store Your Salt Dough Creations the Right Way

Store your DIY pumpkin spice salt dough recipe easy fall craft in a dry place away from direct sunlight. I store my salt dough in a closet inside a brown paper bag. If there’s excess moisture you run the risk of breaking down the dough or getting mold. No one wants that, right?

Spice It Up: Add Warm Fall Scents to Your Salt Dough Creations

If you’d like to make ornaments or gift tags, sprinkle your flat work surface with ground cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice. These spices will blend with the color of your salt dough recipes. All-purpose flour will add a whiter powder layer to your dough. Next, roll out the dough to a 1/4″ thickness. Cut the dough with cookie cutters and cookie stamps and add holes for hanging with a small straw, pipe cleaners, or large toothpick.
