Most Asked Questions:

How do you stay cozy during the cold weather?

A perfect way to keep your home cozy is with throw blankets handy during the winter season. This makes curling up to read your favorite book or to watch a movie more enjoyable. Be sure to remember a cup of hot chocolate, a bowl of soup, or tea.

How can I make our house feel warmer?

To make the home feel warmer, add an area rug such as a flat-weave rug to a cold tile floor. If you are updating a room with a cold tile floor, this is a great place to think about adding radiant-heat floors for extra warmth. When we built this house, I wish we remembered to add this to our dream bathroom wish lists.

Pro Tip: Heavier Fabrics: Add window treatments in heavier fabrics to keep the warmth in and the cold out.

Best Way To Make A Home Cozy For Winter

Today we are going to share a great way to make your home extra cozy throughout the winter season. Now is the perfect time to consider adding natural elements to your winter decor. The easiest way to create cozy vibes is to add throw blankets, and comfy pillows with heavy fabric. Add a sweater knit pillow cover, or a faux fur pillow to your sofa or chairs as I do to our living room. One of my favorite things to add throughout our home during the winter season are natural elements such as pine cones, lit candles, and fairy lights to add a warm glow and softly scented candles.

These are a great way to add texture and soft lighting during the cold weather. Add lit candles for a soft glow to a tray, and adding candles on the coffee table in the living room or family room is an easy way to add to a cozy home feel.

Pinecones

Step 1: Natural Elements: Pine Cones

The first thing, I leave up after the Christmas decorations are taken down and put away are seedlings and combinations of pine cones, cinnamon sticks, and walnuts in the shell. The seedlings add warmth and a bit of greenery during the stark cold months while pine cones are an easy way to add texture and natural elements with their rustic nature. If you follow Cloches & Lavender, you are aware adding natural elements to our home decor is a must when extra warmth our home from fall through the winter season.

Pine cones and nuts in their shells are one of my favorite ways to add natural elements to the bookshelf in our living room.  I tend to use walnuts with some left in their natural state while others are painted with gold and champagne craft paint. These natural elements add texture and a cozy home feel during the winter season.

I leave a combination of pine cones on our coffee table too in a large wooden wine barrel. The natural tone of the wooden wine barrel coupled with the pine cones, cinnamon sticks, and nuts adds texture and is a great combination of natural elements to add cozy vibes to the center of our coffee table. A birch covered battery operated flickering candle adds a warm glow later in the day and into the evenings. The different textures with pine cones, a deer antler, and a rusted crown from the thrift store add a touch of elegance.

Added Bonus: Preserving Pinecones

Added bonus: Sharing this post on cleaning and preserving pine cones from the yard which adds no additional cost. This is a a great time to Pin this for next year so you have this at your fingertips when the colder weather is around the corner. Another added bonus you will find a great way to preserve acorns too and this is a good time to Pin this for next year. You won’t have to search for this easy process to add cozy vibes and natural elements to your home decor.  And there’s an added bonus to adding natural elements to our homes, they are FREE! Now who doesn’t enjoy adding extra warmth to our home decor with free pieces?

Cozy Blankets

Step 2: Cozy Vibes: A Warm Blanket For A Cozy Space

I find a great way to add a cozy home feel is to add throw blankets in different patterns and textures. This is the best way to stay extra cozy with a cup of hot chocolate and a favorite book next to a roaring fire. I add these to our living room during the winter season. Our winter decor is filled with soft neutrals of dark and light gray and mixes seamlessly with the rest of our white decor such as a white pitcher and white soup tureens. To add a pop of color to these pieces I add pine cones and books in rich colors such as dark green, different shades of pink, and a rich navy. Adding books is one of my favorite things to add to our home decor because they add different textures and rich colors, and to add to our cozy home for the winter season with our white decor accent pieces.

An Easy Way To Make Antique Books

By the way, if you enjoy visiting the thrift store, yard sales, and garage sales I share how to make antique books in minutes. This is an easy and great way to use hardcover books you may have in your home. So, take the time to check this DIY out!

Add Color

Step 3: A Perfect Way To Add A Pop Of Color

If you are craving a pop of color during the cold weather, the best way to keep the cozy vibes for a cozy winter home is to add a soft blanket in rich colors to add a pop of color to the white decor. Add throw blankets draped on a chair, sofa, or the foot of the bed to add extra warmth to make for a cozy home. This is a simple way to make any room feel extra cozy after the holiday decorations are taken down.

This throw blanket has a cable sweater knit look and is an extra soft blanket. I love snuggling under it, especially during the very cold weather here in NJ.

Baskets

Step 4: Use Baskets With Natural Elements

Here’s a throw blanket-draped look on a chair with one of my favorite market baskets, so use baskets. When you use baskets, these add texture and can be filled with pine cones, books, dried lavender, and fabric with floral patterns. This is a simple way to add instant cozy vibes to any spot in your home during the winter season.

Another great way to add a pop of color to your winter decor, add a bit of green with small boxwood wreaths. Boxwood is a perfect way to add green to any vignette, mirror, or bowl for any season however having the fresh green hanging from this market basket adds a fresh look for the winter season.

In our family room, we are fortunate to have tons of natural light from large windows on our back wall. Having a semi-open floor plan has large windows to let in so much natural light and filters through to our dining room. The other area of our home that has tons of natural light is our foyer with a large palladium window above our front door.

As you can see our dog Reeses photo bombed me. I think he is adorable looking out his favorite window and keeping an eye on his house.

Throw Pillows

Step 5: Sweater Knit Pillows And Faux Fur Throw Pillows

This is the perfect time and way to add to the cozy home feel. Add throw pillows to your living room sofas and chairs in heavier fabrics such as sweater knit pillow covers, floral patterns, or faux fur lumbar pillows. Make sure these are extra comfy pillows to make your home extra cozy to relax and enjoy your favorite book or movie while snuggling under cozy blankets.

The faux fur pillow is from Overstock I purchased years ago. I enjoy adding a faux fur pillow to our home for a cozy look for the winter to our French chairs in our living room. These pillows are an easy way to add a pop of color for extra warmth during the colder months when the days can be a bit dark. This gives our home an instant cozy home feel.

Added Bonus: The throw pillows with the winter graphic image with muted rich colors are an easy project and I share the best way to tea stain fabric. I use these during Christmas and often leave them out to add to our winter decor.

Fresh Flowers

Step 6: Simple Things: White Pitcher And Fresh Flowers

During the winter season, there is nothing like adding fresh flowers to a white pitcher to add a pop of color and freshness. Add these to a coffee table, or dining table, or create a centerpiece on your dining room table. Light candles add extra warmth and a soft glow to make these areas of your home feel extra cozy.

Here I’m using a white pitcher filled with cedar greens I left out from our Christmas decorations. This adds a pop of color as well as making our bookcase a cozy space in our home.

Dried Flowers

Step 7: Colorful Cozy Home Feel: Dried Flowers

One of my favorite ways to add flowers for a cozy home feel is with dried flowers. I share a great way to dry a wide range of flowers to add to our home during the winter season that adds a great pop of color and the best way to achieve dry flowers to add to your home decor.

Learn the best way to display these in a white pitcher, select the correct fresh flowers, and numerous drying methods including my favorite drying technique. How to create flower arrangements and care and maintenance of dried flowers to use them for a long time in your winter decor.

Candles

Step 8: Light Candles For A Warm Glow

During the cold weather, I add candles everywhere in our home. The warm glow immediately adds a warm feel to any space in the home. Light candles with a warm or spicy scent during the cold months. Add flickering battery operated candles to candle holders, candle sticks, tea lights, and votive holders. I use battery-operated candles all the time and today so many have such a realistic look and the prices don’t add too much additional cost to our budgets. I will be sharing links to my favorite collections that are the perfect way to add a warm glow to any room in your home.

Added bonus: These come with remotes that have many different timer options and they are the best. I have been using these for years in our home so they are tested and one of the easiest ways to have an instant warm glow is to make your home cozy.

Extra Light

Step 9: Good Light Goes A Long Way

Adding good light is imperative for a warm home. Think about adding layers of light to your home decor such as:

  • Floor Lamps: Floor lamps are a great way to add extra light especially if you don’t want to add more overhead lights. Floor lamps are a perfect way to light up a reading chair to enjoy your favorite book. So, just screw in light bulbs and enjoy a soft glow with extra cozy throw blankets.
  • Table Lamps: For table lamps, in a living room or family room, a good rule of thumb, the bottom of lamp shades should be at eye level when you are seated. This is the best way to ensure when sitting in the chair the lighting will be perfect for reading a favorite book or other tasks such as knitting and sewing while snuggling under a warm blanket.

Winter Wreaths

Step 10: Great Time: Winter Wreaths For A Cozy Home

I enjoy adding natural wreaths to our Christmas decorations. Why? These wreaths are one of the easiest ways to add warmth to winter decor. These are mostly made from natural elements that add texture and warmth to the home for a cozy feel.

Here are a few examples.  This easy pinecone wreath is a great way to add natural elements to your home decor.  This can be seen hanging in our home from fall through the colder weather. If you enjoy easy projects here’s an added bonus. Check my DIYs and Crafts section where you will find numerous easy wreaths that work for multiple seasons. Meanwhile, I found a pretty pinecone wreath HERE from Wayfair for a great price.

This Hazelnut wreath I made is an example of why I make simple neutral wreaths that can be left up for the winter season.  These work to add a warm cozy home feel to our home’s winter decor.

After the new year, I put this project together with chunky yarn and it takes no time at all to put together. The winter white color yarn is the perfect way to add instant warmth to a cozy winter home.

Pro Tip: These wreaths are a perfect way to add instant warmth to any dining table or coffee table. Add a flickering battery operated candle to the center and enjoy the warm glow of candlelight.

Conclusion:

Making A Home Cozy

In conclusion, making a home cozy during the winter season doesn’t mean bidding farewell to warmth and comfort. Adding cozy pieces, from throw blankets and throw pillows to the rustic charm of natural elements such as pine cones and the soft glow of candles, you will achieve the perfect cozy home. So, wrap yourself in the comfort of your favorite soft blanket, and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate, while enjoying a warm fire and your favorite book or movie.

  1. Winter is so stark especially after all the pretty Christmas lights come down. I love chunky throws and pillows too.
Anything to bring some cozy warmth. Great ideas Cindy. Happy New Week. xoxo

  2. Great tips, Cindy! I haven’t taken my trees down yet. The other decor is all gone, Santas, signs and wreaths and garlands, but those trees are still making me smile during these gloomy early January days!

  3. Candles, throws, and a hot cup of tea help me get through the winter months. I love your little tree with the white lights though….I may have to look into something like that!

  4. Everything looks so pretty and cozy! I love pinecones, too. In fact, I just put a bunch of them in a large glass jar today. They look a little too dark and kind of boring just by themselves so I was wondering what I could layer in with them…then I saw your photo of the walnuts with the pinecones and really liked that that look. I think I’ll pick up some walnuts next time I’m at the grocery store!

  5. I love a cozy home! My fireplace is on. Those cozy throws, candles, pinecones and wreaths still around. Love your inspiration!

  6. Great tips Cindy! I love keeping throws and quilts out for the winter. It’s so nice to cozy up on the sofa and watch a good movie! Pinned 🙂

  7. These ideas make me want to snuggle up and just enjoy the day, Cindy! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the way you’ve created a warm and intiving home this season. It feels like the perfect time to settle in and enjoy all that winter has to offer. Hugs, CoCo
