Pitchers, glass vases, and ceramic aren’t the only items to use for a spring flower arrangement. I’m sharing a unique design for a flower arrangement and a floral centerpiece Peter Rabbit would hop with approval. This floral arrangement will be the main star of the show on our Easter tablescape. I wanted to do a practice run before adding this to our spring table to celebrate with our family. While I was at the grocery store staring at the bunches of flowers, this was the day to experiment. Guess what I used to make a beautiful floral arrangement? Have any guesses? No, well today sharing easy steps for how to make a cabbage vase for a floral arrangement now!

Make A Cabbage Vase For A Floral Arrangement Now!
- Selecting Materials: Choose a fresh large head of cabbage and floral stems that complement your color scheme.
- Preparing the Cabbage: Wipe the cabbage with a damp paper towel to remove dirt. Remove outer loss leaves, saving them for later use with floral pins in the arrangement. Cut the bottom of your cabbage to create a flat surface for stability.
- Hollowing Out the Cabbage: Use a sharp paring knife to cut the top off the cabbage. Hollow out the center of the cabbage gradually, removing excess cabbage. A fork is a great way to do this process.
- Creating the Vase: Use a small mason jar to trace and cut the appropriate opening on top of the cabbage. Seal any holes in the flowerpot with sticky plastic wrap to reduce water leakage.
- Arranging the Flowers: Cut the flower stems at an angle to the desired length. Insert the flower stems into the cabbage vase arrangement, arranging the bunches of flowers. Add water to the small mason jar and flower preservative packets to keep the flowers fresh.
- Final Touches: Add saved outer cabbage leaves with floral pins for additional decoration. Place the spring flower arrangement on a decorative plate or tray to catch water seepage. Display your cabbage vase floral arrangement as a centerpiece for your spring table or as part of your home decorating.
Share your creation with friends and family to inspire them to get creative with a beautiful flower vase.
Blooms: A Grocery Store Trip Into A DIY Cabbage Vase!
On our first trip to the grocery store, the cabbage choices were small, however, I decided this was a practice run so it didn’t matter. In the end, I’m happy, I brought this cabbage home. More on that in a bit. Because I have MS, I can’t drive anymore, my depth perception isn’t great so it’s unsafe for me and others. Before you say, poor thing, she can’t drive, don’t. I have MS and miss driving but I have a fantastic husband and best friend who takes wherever I need and want to go.
Back to the blog post to share the easy steps to make a floral cabbage arrangement, and I mean easy! My husband went back to the grocery store in the afternoon and guess what, they put out the large head of cabbage, and the best part was they were 19 cents. I wanted a red cabbage unfortunately they didn’t have any.
Supplies Needed:
- A larger paring knife
- Large head of cabbage
- Fresh Flowers
- Cutting Board
- Plastic wrap – the sticky product you “press to seal”
- Floral pins
- Small Glass jar, small mason jar 4 oz. or 6 oz. Dollar store or Hobby Lobby
- Wet paper towel
- Garden pruners
- Floral preservative packets – free in the flower section of the grocery store
Choose Flowers
Step 1: Perfect Combination: Floral Stems For A DIY Floral Centerpiece!
First, choose flowers that work with the color scheme for your spring table or home decorating.
For this floral arrangement, I chose fresh tulips in multiple colors so I’m happy a red cabbage wasn’t available for my DIY cabbage vase. The tulips would have been overwhelming with their colors. As I mentioned above, selecting a large head of cabbage is best, however, I’m sharing an idea I came up with for the small cabbage. Actually, for our Easter floral centerpiece, I’m thinking of using the same idea for larger cabbages.

Prepare The Cabbage
Step 2: Wipe Imperfections: Use A Damp Paper Towel to Remove The Outer Leaves
Remove the outer loose leaves, if they are in good condition save them to add with floral pins to your cabbage vase arrangement. I will add the outer loose leaves using floral pins to add a finished look to a spring flower arrangement
Place cabbage on a cutting board. Hold the cabbage at a 45-degree angle and cut the bottom of your cabbage to have a flat surface. This keeps the bottom of the cabbage flat and safe, otherwise it may wobble.
Trace And Cut The Top Of The Cabbage
Step 3: Precision Crafting: Cut The Top Of The Cabbage For A Cabbage Arrangement!
Next, use a Sharpie trace and the bottom outside edge of the glass mason jar. Using a sharp knife cut the center of the cabbage and begin to to hollow it out. Cut around the cut edge of the cabbage with a paring knife to get to the center. Removing the center of the cabbage a little bit at a time works best. I used a fork to get the bits of cabbage out and put the pieces in a dish. Of course, as I did this I ate the cabbage, I love raw cabbage!
After removing the bottom of your cabbage, flip it over and hollow out the top of the cabbage. This step doesn’t take long especially if you hollow the bottom of the cabbage until you hear the pairing knife tapping the cutting board.
Pro Tip. As I removed the center of the cabbage, I tested the width with the mason jar on top of the cabbage. After measuring the top of the cabbage continue cutting the edge of the cabbage until the width is correct for the glass jar to push carefully through the center of the cabbage.
Leftover Cabbage
Stay Tuned For A Recipe!
So, after removing the cabbage, there’s quite a bit left. I can’t throw it in the garbage. I can hear my mom from heaven saying baby girl, what are you thinking throwing away these cups of leftover cabbage? A recipe will be coming soon. It will include, cabbage, olive oil, chopped yellow onions, and thin strips of pancetta instead of slices of bacon. I have read many add bacon. So, be sure to look for this recipe soon!
Flowerpot DIY Cabbage Vase
Hollowed Cabbage With Flowerpot
Use the same method as above to make your hollowed cabbage. Use the top of a flowerpot to trace the opening on the top of the cabbage. Trace the wider end of the flowerpot on the center of the cabbage with your Sharpie. Follow steps two and three and you will have a beautiful flower vase. After the cabbage is hollowed tear sticky plastic wrap and press well. This will keep the water from leaking through the small hole in the bottom of the flowerpot. Add a little water and a bit from the floral preservative packets to the water.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you choose to use a terracotta pot for your DIY cabbage vase, I recommend using this for the day of your event only. Terracotta is porous and water slowly seeps through the flowerpot. Also, be sure to add a dish underneath the cabbage to prevent any damage to furniture or wood. I had mine for three days and there was minimal water. But It’s IMPORTANT to know about the water seepage. This is my favorite look!
Cut And Arrange Flowers
Step 4: Cut Fresh Tulips For Your Cabbage Arrangement!
Using garden shears I cut the flower stems at an angle to the appropriate length. Next, I added the small mason jar and flowerpot to the center of the cabbage. For the small mason jar, I used a wet paper towel to wipe the jar. This makes it easy to push the glass jar through to the bottom of your cabbage.
Next, add a little water and a bit from the floral preservative packets to the small mason jar. Add fresh tulips or flowers to make a beautiful cabbage arrangement for your Easter tablescape.
Pro Tip: If you choose not to remove the bottom of your cabbage first, cut the bottom flat so it is level when you add it as a floral centerpiece. To make a cabbage centerpiece, you will add wet floral foam. These can also be found at the Dollar Store. To add the floral foam
Floral Pins
Step 5: Adding Floral Pins To Attach Outer Loss Leaves
In the photos, I’m showing how to add the outer loose leaves. I did this to my cabbage and didn’t like how it made my finished DIY centerpiece look. I felt the outer loose leaves took away from the flower arrangement. Feel free to play around with your finished centerpiece and do what works best for your Easter tablescape.

Soooo pretty! I love cabbages as vases. I thought this was a fun idea and did try one once. Funny story, my son used to like to play Kick the Cabbage at Pasadena’s Highland Games when we went several times. Guess that was the ball kids used during the Renaissance. 🙂
Enjoy your beautiful centerpiece,
Hugs,
Barb 🙂
