This date nut bread is an old family recipe. It's fat nd easy to make and is perfect for dessert as well as breakfast

Ingredients
  

  • 10 ounces dates chopped
  • 1 cup walnuts chopped
  • 1/3 cup butter softened DON'T let butter get too soft
  • 1 cup water boiling
  • 1/4 cup water cold plus 1 tsp cold water
  • 3/4 cup dark brown sugar packed
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 egg room temperature
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees
Grease the loaf pan
Mix dates, butter, and boiling water with a wooden spoon
Once the butter melts, add cold water, brown sugar, baking soda, vanilla and egg
When thoroughly blended, pour into the greased loaf pan
Bake for 40-50 minutes.  Test with a toothpick in the center.  It should come out clean
To get the best shelf life from the date nut bread, cover it with aluminum foil or plastic wrap in a plastic bag to prevent it from drying out.
If properly stored, this bread 1 to 2 days at normal room temperature. I generally keep mine refrigerated and it's good for a week.
This also freezes extremely well for 3 months wrapped well.
