Equipment

  • 1 Double boiler, microwave-safe bowl
  • 1 1 tsp. measuring spoon
  • Parchment paper or wax paper
  • 1 large baking sheet
  • 1 Drizzle scoop, fork, or teaspoon
  • 1 silicone spatula
  • 1 ziploc plastic bag

Ingredients

  • 1 bag Wavy potato chips (Lays or Ruffles)
  • 1 bag Regular potato chips (Lays)
  • 1 bag Dark chocolate chips
  • 1 bag White chocolate chips
  • 1 tsp. Vegetable oil or Coconut oil

Instructions

  • Step 1: Make a Unique Snack
Plug in your Wilton chocolate melt and let it start warming up. Just follow the instructions on the package. If using a double boiler, fill a saucepan with about 2 inches of water and set a heat-safe bowl on top. Just make sure the water doesn’t touch the bottom of the bowl. That steam is the secret to a perfect blend and smooth chocolate for covering those wavy potato chips.
Cindy's Potato Chip Note: I don't recommend using Pringles. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy them. Pringles have a distinct flavor. Use Lays wavy chips or Ruffles. Trust me, I promise these are the best choice for this special treat.
  • Step 2: Prep the Chips
Next, toss your Lays crispy potato chips into a Ziploc bag. Press out the air gently, then use your hands to crush the chips into small pieces. Set them aside, they’ll come in handy soon!
Cindy’s Tip: When melting chocolate, keep water away. Make sure your silicone spatula is completely dry. A drop of water will cause chocolate to seize, especially white chocolate.
  • Step 3: Creating Chocolate Crispy Potato Chips
Add dark or white chocolate to a double boiler or candy melt setup. Drop in a teaspoon of vegetable oil, this helps give your chocolate that smooth, tempered look. Be sure to check the end of my blog post for more tips and tricks on adding vegetable oil when melting chocolate. Stir everything together until it’s nice and smooth!
  • Step 4: Whip Up This Snack
Place your parchment paper on your baking sheet and add the wavy potato chips. I was able to fit 16 wavy potato chips on each baking sheet. Now, add a layer of white or dark chocolate using a drizzle cup, fork, or teaspoon. Just be sure to keep the chocolate smooth on each chip.
  • Step 5: Drool-worthy Salty Treats
This next step takes these salty treats to the next level. Sprinkle a small handful of smooth, salty potato chips onto the chocolate, creating a little mound. Think of it like a pile of leaves or a scoop of dirt, messy in the best way.
  • Step 6: Drizzle Chocolate and Chips for the Perfect Combo
Here comes the part of this salty snack that creates the perfect blend, drizzle on a little more white or dark chocolate. Then, add a small sprinkle of those smooth, crispy potato chips. Like I mentioned above, I tested and tweaked these chocolate-covered potato chips, and this step truly takes these salty, chocolatey treats to the next level, I promise! Let them set completely.
Cindy’s Chip Tip: Mix things up. I made a few of these with dark chocolate on the wavy potato chips and drizzled the white on the top. For this chocolate lover, the combination was amazing! Best of both worlds with a crunchy chip.
