Equipment

  • 1 Double boiler, microwave-safe bowl
  • 1 1 tsp. measuring spoon
  • Parchment paper or wax paper
  • 1 large baking sheet
  • 1 Drizzle scoop, fork, or teaspoon
  • 1 silicone spatula
  • 1 ziploc plastic bag

Ingredients

  • 1 bag Wavy potato chips (Lays or Ruffles)
  • 1 bag Regular potato chips (Lays)
  • 1 bag Dark chocolate chips
  • 1 bag White chocolate chips
  • 1 tsp. Vegetable oil or Coconut oil

Instructions

  • Step 1: Make Chocolate-Covered Potato Chips a Unique Snack

Plug in your Wilton chocolate melt or set up your double boiler. Make sure the water doesn't touch the bottom of the heat-safe bowl. The steam is the secret to creating the smooth chocolate for covering crisp, wavy potato chips.
Pringles Warning: I don't recommend using Pringles. (I had them in the house, tried this, it was a failure. Pringles have a distinct flavor.) Use Lays Wavy chips or Ruffles instead. Trust me, they have a sturdy base for this special treat. Using Lays Wavy chips ensures each bit of these chocolate-covered potato chips has the perfect crunch and blends perfectly with the dark chocolate or creamy chocolate for your salty potato chips to be the perfect special treat.
Cindy's Potato Chip Note: Avoid high temperatures, as this can seize the chocolate. Using a double boiler is the best way to maintain smooth chocolate, whether dark, white, or even milk chocolate-covered potato chips.
  • Step 2: Prep the Chips for the Perfect Salty Combo

Next, toss your smooth Lays crispy potato chips into a Ziploc plastic bag. Press out the air, then gently use your hands to crush the chips into small pieces. Set them aside; these crispy potato chips combined with melted chocolate form the ideal salty snack.
Cindy's Tip: When melting chocolate, keep water away. Make sure your silicone spatula is completely dry. A drop of water will cause chocolate to seize, especially white chocolate.
  • Step 3: Creating the Perfect Blend for Your Crispy Potato Chips

Melt dark chocolate or white chocolate in your heat-safe bowl over a double boiler or candy melt setup. Add a teaspoon of vegetable oil; this helps give your chocolate a smooth, tempered look. Be sure to check the end of my blog post for more tips and tricks on adding vegetable oil when melting chocolate. Stir everything together until it's smooth!
  • Step 4: Whip Up This Chocolatey Snack

Place your parchment paper on your baking sheet and add the wavy potato chips. I was able to fit 16 wavy potato chips on each baking sheet. These will be your sturdy base for chocolate-covered potato chips. Now, add a layer of white or melted chocolate using a drizzle cup, fork, or teaspoon. Just be sure to keep the chocolate smooth on each chip.
  • Step 5: Taking Your Treats to the Next Level

This next step takes these salty treats to the next level. Sprinkle a small handful of crumbled, smooth, salty potato chips onto the chocolate, creating a little mound. Think of it like a pile of leaves or a scoop of dirt, messy in the best way.
  • Step 6: Drizzle Chocolate and Broken Chips for the Perfect Combo

Here comes the part of this salty snack that creates the perfect blend: drizzle on a little more chocolate. Then, add a small sprinkle of those smooth, broken, crispy potato chips. As I mentioned above, I tested and tweaked these chocolate-covered potato chips, and this step truly takes these salty, chocolatey treats to the next level, I promise! Let them set completely.
Cindy's Chip Tip: Mix things up. I made a few of these with rich chocolate on the wavy potato chips and drizzled the white on the top. For this chocolate lover, the combination was amazing! Best of both worlds with a crunchy chip.
